I'm still learning. Why do a lot of horses spook easily? Why do some seem more "well-adjusted" and don't have as much problems dealing with new situations and environments?

Horses spook because they are a prey animal - somebody's dinner! The more adjusted horses have been taught how to deal with their emotions -and to use the thinking side of their brain more, than the reactive side. Horses need to be subjected to many different levels of emotional stimuli in order to teach them how to react correctly when around humans. For a horse, spook and run makes perfect sense! They know that in the wild, if they are incorrect in guessing if something is dangerous - they are most likely dead! However, in the human world, we teach horses to do things that don't come naturally (honsetly, wearing a dead cow on your back has got to have the horse wondering if we killed the cow- are we going to kill it?). This is what makes horses so AMAZING! So many times we call horses cowards, or stupid, when in actuallity, they are extremely brave and intelligent! Think about how long we go to school to interact in society, and then compare how long a horse gets training before it is expected to be 'perfect.' Big difference! Anyhow, these are the main reasons why horses are 'spooky,' and while some horses seem to be more 'well-adjusted.' Hope it helps! God Bless, Misty |
